I have a brand-new Fire TV Cube sitting on my dresser. Why haven’t you opened it yet? I’m currently working on launching a YouTube channel to accompany this blog. Creating “unboxing videos” is on my list of things to do over the next few weeks, so for now I wait and stare. The fact remains! I started thinking about how I was going to use the Cube to control my TV with Alexa once I finished all this waiting and staring.

My search for a list of Alexa Fire TV cube and stick commands began. Where did it lead?

Besides some very basic instructions on Amazon, I was unable to find any comprehensive Alexa Fire TV cube and stick commands.

Before You Begin

All commands on the Alexa Fire TV Cube and stick commands list assume you’re using Alexa as your wake word. The wake word must be changed if it differs. Seriously? Definitely.

In addition, the following is also necessary. Consequently, you need to get these things done as soon as possible:

  1. Make sure your Alexa device is compatible. These products are listed in partial order: Echo Show 2nd Generation, Echo Show 1st Generation, Echo Show 5, Echo Dot, Amazon Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Spot.
  2. Ensure your Fire TV device is properly set up and configured. Make sure the Alexa app is linked to your Fire TV.  Both Alexa and Fire TV must be linked to the same Amazon account.
  3. A Smart TV that has HDMI-CEC support is required to use the Fire TV Stick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am having trouble getting Alexa to pause on Netflix. What can I do?

A: If you’re using an Echo device, make sure it’s connected to the Fire TV device through the Alexa app.

  1. Select Music, Video, & Books from the menu.
  2. Click Fire TV.
  3. A guide will appear to assist you.
  4. To confirm, click Link Devices.

Q: My Fire TV Cube won’t set up. All I see is a blank screen. What can I do?

A: Ensure that it’s set up for the correct input. Here are some troubleshooting tips from Amazon.

Q: How should I proceed if Alexa lights up but does not respond to Fire TV Cube commands?

A: The following is what Amazon recommends you do (solution taken from Amazon support):

In case the device does not light up:
  • Make sure the device is positioned to hear you.
  • Make sure the device is powered.

If Alexa doesn’t respond after powering on:

  • Check the voice history in the Alexa app.
  • If you say, “I can’t hear you,” the Fire TV Cube responds rather than your powered-off TV or soundbar.

Q: The response time of my Fire TV Cube is slow. What should I do?

A: Install the latest firmware update. You can follow Tom’s Guide to update the Fire TV Cube step-by-step. You can find it here.
