854 Area Code – Could It Be Risky?
The 10-digit telephone number (area code plus 7-digit telephone number) will be required for all local calls within the South Carolina 843 area code starting September 18, 2015. South Carolina and its coastal counties, however, are home to the 854 area code.
It covers:
- The coastal counties of South Carolina
- Charleston
- Hilton Head Island
- Myrtle Beach
- Florence
The 843 area code will be replaced with the 854 area code. However, an area code overlay was ordered by the South Carolina Public Service Commission for the area served by 843. Additionally, in the same geographical area as the 843 area code, the new 854 area code will be superimposed.
However, in the existing (843) area code area, the new 854 area code will affect residential and business customers. Moreover, in the 843 area code region, new service requests, additional lines, or moving service requests will receive an 854 area code number from October 19, 2015.
Details of 854 Area Code:
This new area code will be added with the dialing change. As a result, beginning September 18, 2015, all local calls must be made using the 10-digit telephone number (area code plus seven digit local number). Additionally, in the new 854 area code, local calls must also be made using the new dialing procedure.
Consumers and businesses should know the following about the upcoming overlay of the 843 area code:
- There will be no change to your current number, including the area code.
- Local calls must be dialed with the area code.
- The long-distance phone numbers will remain 1 + area code + phone number.
- Currently, a local call is considered to be local.
- With the overlay, the price of a call won’t change, nor will the coverage area.
- To reach 911, you still need to dial three digits.
- As long as these codes are available in your community, you can dial them with just three digits: 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, or 811.
A customer’s telephone number should be identified as a ten digit number (area code + 7-digit telephone number), and they should give their friends, family, business associates, and customers their area code.
Dialing 854 Area Code Numbers:
It is important that all services, automatic dialing equipment, applications, software, or other types of equipment programmed to dial seven-digit numbers have been reprogrammed to recognize the new 854 area code as a valid area code and use the new dialing procedure.
Mobile phone contact lists, speed dialers, alarm systems, fax machines, gates, PBXs, internet dial-up numbers, and life safety systems are just a few examples.
In addition, the area code should be included in your website, stationery, advertising materials, checks, and pet identification tags. Local calls must be programmed with 10 digits and long distance calls must be programmed with 1.
