Each weekend, I either watch something on TV or watch a movie or show I’ve been meaning to see. However, if your TV says no signal but your cable box is on then you can try the methods mentioned below to get it fixed.
The picture suddenly stopped, and my TV’s No signal screen popped up.
However, there was no signal coming through to the TV despite the cable box remaining on.
As soon as I learned what was going on, I wanted to prevent this from occurring again in the future.
I researched my cable provider’s troubleshooting guides and user forums online to find out how to fix a no signal error on TV when the cable box is on.
This guide is the result of that research to show you what you can do when your TV says there is no signal, but your cable box is still on.
In order to fix the ‘no signal issue on the TV when the cable box is on’, check all connections between the TV and set-top box. Check with your cable provider to find out if there is an outage in your area as well.
How can I resolve the “No Signal” error on TV when your cable box is on?
The ‘No Signal’ error on your TV means that it is no longer receiving signals from whatever input it is connected to.
Even though my cable box was still turned on, my TV reported no signal, which is typically the case when the input device is turned off.
Troubleshooting the issue is relatively simple, and it doesn’t take up much of your time.
Despite the cable box being turned on, the “No Signal” error appears on TV?
The reason why there may No signal on TV even with the cable box turned on can be due to a number of reasons.
It is possible that one of them might be that you are experiencing an outage with your cable provider.
Although that may be the case, it is not impossible to speculate that your box may have also died.
Considering that there are quite a few possible causes for the problem, it would be best to get started with troubleshooting right away.
If your TV says ‘No Signal’ but the cable box is turned on then examine all cables and connections
As the number one reason for a No signal error on TV is the problem with cables and connections check all connections between the cable box and TV.
It is also important to check the ports and clean out any dust or dirt that might be inside them with a dry microfiber cloth or an earbud.
The ends of the HDMI connectors of your cable box should not be bent or damaged if it uses HDMI.
If they are, you should look for ones with gold-plated ends, such as the Belkin Ultra HD HDMI cable .
Not only does this cable support 4K, it also supports high-bitrate audio.
It is very important that you replace any damaged cables or wires, including those that deliver power to the box and the TV. This is also what you should do if your Digital TV keeps losing signal.
Restart your TV and cable box
If the signal continues to lose strength, it would be best to restart the cable box.
If you want to do this, you will either need to use the remote control or the power button on the box itself.
When you turn the appliance off, it is a good idea to wait a few minutes before turning it back on after it has been turned off.
When that has been done, reboot your TV.
The TV should be turned off before turning it back on again. Then turn it on again immediately after it has been turned off. After a few minutes, you will be able to get it back up and running for you again.
Make sure that the TV is connected to the correct input source
The other reason your TV is displaying No Signal is that the input mode your TV is currently in is not the same one as the one the cable box is connected to.
You can try switching inputs until you see the TV.
To bring up the inputs menu on your TV remote, you need to press the input button.
Make sure you check each input using either the input button itself or the directional keys.
Check for service outages
If you are still not receiving a signal, you can contact your cable provider.
Make sure to ask if there are any outages in your area, and if yes, how long it will take to fix them.
When you are done on the call, and if there is an outage, the best thing for you to do is to wait until the service is restored.
During the time while the outage is being fixed, you can either take a walk around the house, watch something online, or just basically do anything to pass the time.
If your TV says No Signal but Cable Box is On: You will need to reset both your cable box and TV
The next step is very similar to how we restarted your cable box and your TV the last time.
The restart only performs a soft reset, which means that not all settings are reverted at once.
A reset, however, reverts almost all settings changes, with the exception of those made by the user, back to their default values.
When you were unable to get your TV to work after trying everything else, it would be a good idea to try a reset.
Follow these steps to reset the cable box:
- Switch the cable box off first.
- Disconnect the cable box for five minutes, and then reconnect it.
- Turn on the box after plugging it back in.
