There is a simple solution that does not require you to tear apart your Samsung tv no picture but sound. It took me a while to realize that the problem was not hardware, but an issue with the firmware. It turned out that the problem was much simpler to resolve than I had initially thought.
Samsung TV No Picture But Sound
The following is how I was able to retrieve the picture.
The power-cycling of your Samsung TV will fix the problem when you have sound but no picture. The first step is to unplug your TV from its power source. The power button on the TV should be held for 15 seconds while the TV is unplugged. Connect your TV again after waiting 30 seconds.

Power-cycle your Samsung TV
Whenever you encounter technical difficulties, power-cycling your TV is always the first step you should take. Many people think it won’t work, but it works most of the time.
Power-cycling simply refers to switching off and then on a device again. In a similar way, we will do something different.
- The first thing you need to do is unplug your TV.
NOTE: If you have a surge protector, make sure your TV isn’t connected to it. Surge protectors are known to cause power outages!
- The power button is located on the back of the TV after it has been unplugged. You should hold it in for about 15 seconds after you find it.
Don’t use the remote control to power the TV! Instead, use the power button on the TV! The power excess in your TV is stored in capacitors, even when the TV is unplugged. You can fully reset your TV by pressing and holding the power button.
- You should wait until the 15 seconds are over before unplugging your TV. Once the 15 seconds are up, release the power button.
Most issues can be resolved by following these three simple steps. If your Samsung TV still doesn’t display pictures, continue reading.
Check every Samsung TV connection
Double-check all connections to your Samsung television if power-cycling it did not work.
- Connect your TV to your computer after you have disconnected everything from it. Wait 30 seconds and then reconnect everything. Don’t forget to tighten and secure every connection!
Most people these days connect at least 2-3 external devices to their Samsung TV, whether they are streaming devices like Roku, Firestick, Chromecast, game consoles like Playstation or X-Box, or cable boxes.
There can be issues with your TV display if you have loose connections to any of these devices.
- If your TV has multiple HDMI ports, you may want to consider connecting your external device there.
HDMI ports can fail over time, although they are not all that common. If you have display problems with a cable box connected to HDMI 1, try plugging it into HDMI 2 and seeing if it fixes them.
- Ensure that every cable and cord is in good condition, and make sure that they are not damaged.
Check your home to see if you have another cord of the same type lying around and try that instead if you suspect there is a problem with your cord. To test whether it will resolve the problem, try using a different HDMI cable if your cable box is using an HDMI cord.
- Finally, if you are using an external device, you will need to make sure that your Samsung TV is on the correct channel/input.
HDMI is the most common connection method for external devices these days. A corresponding number is assigned to each HDMI port on your TV.
When you connect your cable box to the HDMI 1 port, but your TV is set to HDMI 2, you will not be able to see anything on your screen.
The channel you want to watch can be found by pressing the input/source button on your remote.

Switch to another external device if possible
Alternatively, you may have an external device causing this issue, not your Samsung TV.
You can try these steps if you’re having trouble viewing your television with a cable box, or a game console, for example.
- You may want to try disconnecting the external device that is causing you problems and using a different one. If you don’t want to modify the TV, you can use it as is.
You’ve probably got a problem with the external device if you’re still not getting a picture after disconnecting it.
Samsung TV hardware issues
It’s possible that your Samsung TV has a hardware issue if you tried all the fixes above and your picture still doesn’t work.
If your TV is experiencing a hardware issue, here are a few ways to diagnose it.
- Put your Samsung TV on and turn off the lights. You should be able to see light shining through the back vent of your television. NOTE: You will not be able to look through the vent on every Samsung TV. There is no alternative to taking off the back panel of these TVs.
There should still be light on your TV if there is a backlight. A bad main board (motherboard) or T-Con board is most likely the cause of this problem. You would have to replace each one individually if you couldn’t figure out which one was malfunctioning.
The T-Con board almost always needs to be replaced first, though, since your TV still has sound.
- In the previous step, if you didn’t see any lights, it means your backlight doesn’t work. It would be best in this case to turn off the lights again, make sure your TV is on, and bring up the TV menu. Flashlights can be used to reveal menus on screens.
The flashing light should be kept just a few inches from the screen and moved all around. After a while, you should see the TV menu faintly.
In the event you see an image, it’s probably your inverter or LED driver that’s malfunctioning, not your T-Con board or main board.
NOTE: Inverters / LED drivers are usually integrated directly into the power supply board of Samsung TVs. The power board will need to be replaced in those cases.
A broken LED strip is more likely to be caused by a broken inverter and LED driver. One broken light will end up causing the entire strip to fail.
It is unfortunately necessary to take your TV apart in order to fix each of these hardware problems.
